PRBA Reaction to Santorum’s Insensitivity Towards Latino Issues
Rick Santorum's assertion that Puerto Rico, as a condition of statehood, must adopt English as its main language displays a callous disregard of the will of the island's residents. This goes beyond a discussion of the pros and cons of statehood. Choice in one's cultural expression is essential to personhood. For over 100 years of United States occupation, the people of Puerto Rico have not ceded to linguistic imperialism by substituting English as its main language. This has been a deliberate and well-published choice. Spanish language is imbedded in the fabric of Puerto Rican culture and identity.
