PUERTO RICAN BAR ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS EXCLUSION OF LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER PUERTO RICANS FROM HATE CRIME LAW

The Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc. (“PRBA”) has learned with great distress and disbelief that the Government of Puerto Rico is voting to amend the penal code to eliminate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) Puerto Ricans as enumerated victims protected by hate crimes legislation. Since 2002, LGBT citizens have been protected by the hate crimes legislation. The PRBA strongly urges the Puerto Rican Senate and Governor Luis Fortuno not to permit this travesty of justice and eliminate this class of individuals from legislative protections.
