“I can be very difficult,” explained the bride-to-be.

She glanced over at her partner, who stood close beside her, and who waited silently with an anxious smile. “But she is a very good woman.”

Karen Cofield was unambiguous about her love for Gwen Williams, the woman she’d soon officially call wife, as they stood together on the Grand
Concourse in the Bronx, just minutes from the home they share on 167th Street and Sheridan Avenue. As they waited for their friend and witness to arrive, Cofield would only admit to the smallest of jitters.

“I am a little nervous,” she admitted, her bluster momentarily broken. “This means a lot to us, to me.”
