The Puerto Rican Bar Association presented a course on the Laws of Inheritance of New York and Puerto Rico at the Intercontinental Hotel, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on November 7, 2009. The first of its kind, the PRBA worked in conjunction with the Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico -- until this year, the only bar association in Puerto Rico for which professional membership was required by law, with 14,000 members - to present attendees with an overview of an area of law that affects the lives of many residents of New York and Puerto Rico.
Held at the site of the Somos El Futuro Conference, the event was attended by over 50 people. Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer graciously moderated the event. PRBA President Roberto Ramirez provided inspirational remarks, that were followed by a highly informative presentation by the Colegio’s Vice-President Antonio Bennezar on the history of Puerto Rico’s Civil Code. PRBA member Myrna Socorro presented an overview of New York law and PRBA member Isabel Abislaiman presented an overview of Puerto Rican law on inheritance. The presentations were followed by a lively and thought provoking question and answer session.
The PRBA and the Colegio intend to host additional events in the future to foster professional and business development among PRBA members and the attorneys practicing in Puerto Rico. Moreover, the PRBA is seeking to acquire continuing legal education provider status: the New York law portion of the program is part of that effort and pending CLE approval for attendees.
